You could mark the 400th anniversary of the death of the world’s favourite playwright on a free tour of London.
Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre is one of the key attractions on our free walking tour of the East End. The Globe is a loving recreation of an Elizabethan playhouse, complete with thatched roof. You can tour the site, discover what it was like to be an Elizabethan playgoer, watch performances, and visit the exhibition underneath the theatre.
The exhibition explores the life and times of the Bard of Avon, his plays, and the theatre for which he wrote. It will also give you an insight into the London of his day – the taverns, bawdy-houses, and who would visit its theatres.
You can learn about Bankside and its theatres, discover the original site of The Globe and its rival The Rose Theatre. The Rose was the original theatre, and it has been excavated by archaeologists in a dig which began in 1989. You can also find out about how the current Globe was reconstructed. As Shakespeare wrote: “All the world’s a stage…”
Our free East End walking tour is narrated by Shakespearian actor Richard Heffer, and also takes in other key sites in Tudor history. You can visit the Tower of London, where in 1536 Anne Boleyn was held before her execution on the orders of King Henry VIII and then executed on Tower Green. Her cousin, Catherine Howard, was also executed there in 1542 after being found guilty of adultery during her marriage to Henry. Lady Jane Grey and Robert Devereux, the Earl of Essex, were also executed at the Tower. It is now home to the Crown Jewels.
The tour also includes Execution Dock where from the 15th Century pirates were hanged over the River Thames. One pub there, the Turk’s Head (which is now a cafe), was allowed to serve the condemned men their last quart of ale. The most famous pirate hanged at Execution Dock was Captain Kidd, who was executed in 1701. He was the inspiration for Treasure Island.
You take the tour at your own pace – stopping off for as long as you want at each attraction. You can download our East End tour free when you buy an MP3 of our West End tour, or you can buy both tours on CD for your family or friends. Find out more here: http://www.freelondontours.co.uk/buy-now/
