Why does this website exist? The What, the How, the Why!
And whilst I was walking and dreaming I’d hear Americans, Europeans and Australasians asking lots of questions, such as:
“What shall we do today?”
“There’s so much to see, to learn, to discover… where do we start?”
“Where shall we go next, how do we get there?”
When I spoke to them they bemoaned many things, such as:
“The guide books are clunky, not easy to follow”
“The guided tours are expensive”
“There’s too many people”
“It’s too slow”
“It’s too fast!”
“The pace is forced to the organisers programme, you can’t stop and linger if you want to”.
Then I had my light bulb moment. Aha!
I’m Phil Davies, a Londoner. I’m not famous, just an ordinary UK citizen, doing my financial trading. I have 3 children, they have all left home. So I spend a lot of my free time walking London, which is why I’m a very light user of social media!
My light bulb moment was this… why don’t I pull together all the historical sights I know people want to see? Why don’t I create ‘walking tours’ that people can download? Then they can enjoy the wealth of rich history at their own pace, in their own time, without being hassled by Tour Guides and other people in the group they don’t know.
The best way to enjoy London is walking – experience the sights, the sounds, the aromas; stir your imagination. And it’s healthy too. You’re independent, enjoying London close-up, only interrupted when you want it.
And that’s it. I knew what most tourist visitors wanted, I’d asked them. So I walked London, recording the points of historical interest. That’s why I’ve done this website.
There are 2 classic walking tours, one for the West End and one for The City (it’s called East End on this website, but its more The City of London). An easy to enjoy, structured walking tour… that gives you the independence and freedom that cannot be provided by Tour Guides who have to work to a set time & schedule.
If you’re fit and like cramming things in, each tour takes a half day. If you want to be more leisurely, stop for breaks, snacks, lunch, drinks, you can… there’s no Tour Guide moving you on to someone else’s agenda plan… each tour is a great day out in the open, gorging yourself on London historical delights!
Download the 2 tours here, one of them is free, the other is cheap… you can also get the CD souvenir for both tours and download it to several MP3 players if you’re with friends or family.
They’re quality recordings. They are introduced by Sir Leslie Philips, a famous stalwart of British film & entertainment. The commentary is presented a Richard Heffer, a celebrated Shakespearean actor, so most nationalities will be able to understand his perfect English!
